GROWING & PRUNING
‘Banana Cream’ shasta daisy is a very easy perennial to grow, so it is a good choice for any gardener from beginner to advanced.
Choose a sunny spot to grow your new ‘Banana Cream’ flowers. If you are gardening in the south, some afternoon shade is a good idea and will preserve the yellow flower color longer. Daisies are not very fussy about the type of soil you plant them in as long as they have good drainage so their roots won’t sit in water for long. Daisies hate wet roots, especially in winter.
‘Banana Cream’ prefers average moisture amounts, which means about an inch of water per week. Their thick leaves store moisture well, so they don’t wilt very easily. If your plant is wilting, it is too dry. Try to water it before it wilts so its vigorous growth momentum keeps right on going.
Once the flowers have finished and they turn brown, trim them off. You should see tiny little buds starting to form on the stems below the spent flowers by that time. Those are the next round of flowers to bloom, so take care not to cut those off. Your plants should rebloom within a few weeks of removing the spent flowers.
Feed your ‘Banana Cream’ daisies with a balanced plant food once in spring after new growth appears and again in midsummer to keep them blooming longer. Do not feed them after midsummer.
In the fall, after the whole plant has turned brown, you can cut the foliage back to the ground. It will return the following spring.
upright containers
If your garden space is limited or you’d just like to try growing daisies in a container, use ‘Banana Cream’ as a “thriller” in a large container or grow it on its own.
If you choose to grow ‘Banana Cream’ on its own in a container, choose one that is at least 10” in diameter. If you want to overwinter the plant in that same container and grow it again next year, choose an even larger container. The greater the amount of soil around the roots, the bigger the plant will grow and the more likely it is to overwinter well.
If you would like to grow ‘Banana Cream’ in combination with other flowers and plants in a container, you will need to start with one that is at least 18” in diameter. If the container will be viewed from only one side, plant ‘Banana Cream’ in the back of the container. If the container will be viewed from all sides, plant ‘Banana Cream’ in the center. Then surround it with shorter plants–your “fillers” and “spillers”.
When deciding which flowers and plants to pair with your daisies, keep in mind that they all should like to grow in the same conditions, namely full sun and average water. Choose colors that will complement the soft yellow blooms of ‘Banana Cream’ such as pastel and deep purples, light pinks and chartreuse.
When your ‘Banana Cream’ daisy is finished blooming in late summer, consider taking that plant out of the container and replacing it with an ornamental grass or another plant that will add interest to the combination throughout the fall months. Then plant your daisy in a sunny spot in the landscape where you can enjoy it for years to come.
LANDSCAPES
‘Banana Cream’ shasta daisies are beautiful, reliable perennial plants that you can plant in any sunny spot in your landscape. They mix effortlessly with other perennials in the garden. You could choose to plant just one to complement a grouping of blue, purple or pink flowers in your garden. Even if you plant just one, the clump will grow wider each year as the plant multiplies.
Many people choose to grow 3-5 plants in a grouping for an instant effect and strong showing of color in the landscape. Planting more than one together will give you the look of a more mature garden faster than if you plant just one. You’ll also have more to spare for your cut flower bouquets, in which these flowers will last up to two weeks.
