INSTINCT RECIPE
When you rely on fantastic foliage instead of blooms, every day is a parade of color in the garden. Instinct combines two of our most popular caladiums with warm and cool tones juxtaposed together in one award-winning recipe. You might think of them strictly as shade plants but Heart to Heart® caladiums are surprisingly sun tolerant too, so no matter where you could use a splash of summer color, these flashy tropicals will deliver. Thankfully, deer aren’t fond of them — caladiums are one of few shade tolerant plants they’ll pass on by.
*Grows well in both sun and shade except in hot, arid climates where some shade is necessary.
Heart to Heart® ‘Chinook’ Caladium
A unique color for caladiums, ‘Chinook’ is a gorgeous shade of salmon pink that is quite rare compared to most warm-hued varieties in which pink and red tones dominate. The color is appreciated even more when set against the neutral backdrop of ‘White Wonder’ caladium leaves. Since its leaves are a bit broader with smoother margins, they lend a sense of fullness to the recipe.
Heart to Heart® ‘White Wonder’ Caladium
This elegant, wavy-edged caladium is the perfect complement to its salmon pink neighbor. Look carefully and you will notice a small splash of red where the leaf meets the stem. In certain lighting, you’ll also notice a whisper of soft pink brushing over the leaves. These nuances are just enough to marry the two varieties together in perfect harmony.
option 1:
plant your own combo
2x ‘white wonder’
3x ‘chinook’
Tips For Success:
This recipe assumes one bulb per plant. If you purchase a larger pot of caladiums, gently separate the bulbs and arrange them like you see here in the container recipe layout. When the plants are young, they don’t like the soil to dry out but once they are established, less water is needed. It’s important to wait until the temperature is consistently above 60°F before moving your potted caladiums outdoors.
option 2:
purchase a combo to go
The Instinct caladium recipe is widely available at retailers across North America. Look for it in hanging baskets and upright patio pots at your favorite local garden center. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Request it by name next time you shop.
option 3:
purchase plants online
If your local retailers aren’t carrying the varieties in the Instinct recipe, you can always purchase them online.
